Phil Mickelson is one of the PGA Tour’s most recognizable and popular players. He has won four majors and a total of 39 events over a 19 year career on tour. Will he win more tournaments? Will he win more majors? Answer to the first question is “yes”. Seven players have won at least seven tournaments after age 40. Vijay Singh has won an astonishing 22 times after turning 40. Kenny Perry has won 11 times, Steve Stricker eight times. Mickelson’s game is still competitive and barring any further health problems either for himself or family it is reasonable to assume that Phil will win again.

Will Phil win more majors? This question is not so easy to answer. Competition in majors has increased, and with the emergence of younger players such as Fowler, McIlroy and Ishikawa, as well as players just entering their prime such as Dustin Johnson and Bubba Watson, as well as the number one ranked player, Luke Donald, the competition and pressure to win majors is far more severe.

Phil is not running out of time to win, but he may be running out of dedication to doing what is necessary to win tournaments and majors.

Five years ago Tiger Woods was not only the most dominant golfer in the world, he was arguably the most dominate person in sports. No matter where he was playing he was always the favorite. And while he may not have won every week he at least did enough to make it interesting, something that couldn’t be said about the other golfers out there. He never seemed out of an event. You got the feeling that being down by nine strokes with nine holes to go wasn’t cause for concern. Plus, everyone else out there on the course could feel him breathing down there neck.

The key to Tiger Woods regaining his old form isn’t so much about anything he does physically, but instead getting that killer instinct back. One of the reasons he won so many events was because the golfers who were in front of him on the scoreboard were afraid of him, so to say. They never felt comfortable, even when Woods was five shots behind them. If he can just put together four great rounds of golf and show shades of what he once was you better believe that some of that “Old Tiger” will come back. If it does than you better watch out.

While it may be eight months away it’s never too early to start looking ahead to the 2012 British Open. For the first time since 2001 the open will return to the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club in Lytham St Annes, England. Located on the western coast of England, golfers can expect everything that they have grown to love (and hate) about the British Open: wind and rain, all in unpredictable fashion. Yes, it could be sunny and calm when you start on the first hole and rainy and windy by the time you get to the seventh. What else would you expect from the British Open?

As with most tournaments post-Tiger dominance, their will more than likely not be a clear cut favorite entering the tournament. That could all change if Rory McIlroy becomes the consistent golfer we always thought he would be, or if Luke Donald finally is able to breakthrough in the majors. The regular “favorites” will always be there as well, such as Louis Oosthuizen, Padraig Harrington, Lucas Glover and Phil Mickelson. And who knows, if Tiger can finally get the spark and start playing half as good as he did before, we may see him with a chance to win his fourth Claret Jug.

The Olympic Club in San Francisco hosts the 2012 U.S. Open for the first time since Lee Janzen won the open title there in 1998. It’s a ways away, but it’s never too soon to wonder who the 2012 winner might be.
The 2011 Open winner, Rory McIlroy, comes first to mind. However, winning the U.S. Open in back to back years is rare. The last golfer to accomplish it was Curtis Strange in 1988 and 1989.
Luke Donald is certainly on a roll. With his win last week, Donald secured the 2011 season earnings title. 2012 might just be his year.
Never count out a golfer who’s won the U.S. Open before. Two time winner Retief Goosen isn’t playing too badly right now. If he can bring his game up to his old standards, Goosen might be a three time winner. The same could be said of Ernie Els.
The one golfer who it seems many people have written off could once again demonstrate the brillance that made him one of the greatest golfers of all time. Tiger Woods has had his ups and downs on and off the course. However, if he can stay healthy, he might find 2012 to be a very good year.Keep looking, there’s more: 2011 U.S. Open Preview & Fantasy Picks
